The Epilepsy Foundation Central & South Texas (EFCST) is a not-for-profit organization serving the Central and South Texas community with distinction since 1993. EFCST offers clinical services, education, awareness, advocacy, case management services, and youth and community programs to people living with epilepsy, their families, and the communities in which they live.

The future Chief Executive Officer of the Epilepsy Foundation Central & South Texas will scale the organization and significantly expand its reach. Guiding the Board(s) and a staff of 10+, the CEO will be instrumental in strengthening partnerships, maximizing the potential of our programs, and fostering their professional growth. With a budget size of $1.4M, EFCST currently serves a diverse community across 79 counties and 89,199 square miles in Central and South Texas. The CEO’s leadership will directly impact EFCST’s growth and the lives we touch. 

The Chief Executive Officer reports to the Corporate Board of Directors and Local Field Office Board and is ultimately responsible for the vibrancy and engagement of a volunteer community and development goals to support the organization's mission. The Chief Executive Officer will also direct and oversee the EFCST Professional Advisory Board. 

The Chief Executive Officer of the Epilepsy Foundation Central & South Texas will be a proven visionary leader with a minimum of seven to ten years of progressive executive leadership experience. More than just experience, the Chief Executive Officer will have a deep and abiding passion for EFCST’s mission and the individuals and families we serve, driving their commitment to our cause and fostering a personal connection to the mission. The CEO will lead the organization in achieving its mission and vision and ensuring that all activities align with these guiding principles.

The annual compensation range for this position is between $120,000 and $150,000.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to provide leadership to volunteers and staff; to define and carry out the goals of the Epilepsy Foundation Central & South Texas by working through officers and other members of the Corporate Board of Directors and the Local Field Office Board of Directors; and to develop the consensus required for effective operation of a voluntary organization.

This position also requires:

  • The ability to obtain maximum results from using the foundation’s resource knowledge of the nonprofit sector.
  • Experience in managing voluntary organizational staff development.
  • Experience with financial management, program and budget planning, donor cultivation, fundraising, and public relations.
  • The ability to collaborate, adapt, and communicate effectively with various organizations and individuals.
  • College degree (Master's preferred) in business, public or health administration, social work, or other related fields plus a minimum of 5 years of progressive work and positive management experience (not-for-profit organization, preferred).

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:

The Chief Executive Officer will be directly accountable to the Board of Directors. The CEO is to administer the affairs of the organization and ensure that the policies and instructions of the Board are carried out. This includes responsibility for the organization's growth, financial performance, and overall successful operations of the affiliate. The CEO is not a voting member; the CEO or their designee will participate in all Board meetings and committees.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Chief Executive Officer will be responsible for the internal management of the organization's activities, including supervision of all staff, oversight of financial transactions, administration of agency policies and procedures, completion and monitoring of agency budgets and financial reports, and staff recruitment and development. The CEO’s role in developing and implementing financial strategies is crucial to ensure the organization's economic health and sustainability. 

  • Provide leadership to volunteers and staff, communicating the organization's mission, vision, and commitments.
  • Creates an atmosphere of pride, passion, professionalism, and open communication.
  • Maintains close working relationships with officers, committee chairpersons, members of the Board, foundation volunteers, staff, the Epilepsy Foundation National Office, and its Affiliates.
  • Recommends appropriate staffing needs and priorities to the Board. Has final authority for the hiring, discipline, and termination of employment of all staff, subject to the personnel policies adopted by the Board.
  • Develop personnel policies relating to working conditions, salary schedules, etc., for the organization.
  • Maintains succession plans and promotes the development of staff members.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of policies, programs, and budgets and advise the Board of revisions or new developments. Administers policies and revisions adopted by the Board.
  • Ensures that the organization's operations comply with the Epilepsy Foundation Standards for Affiliates and all relevant laws and regulations.
  • Reviews the foundation’s bylaws, programs, and operations and develops and recommends changes to the Board for effective organizational functioning.
  • Maintains and provides direction of the organization’s budget, including periodic review of financial expenditures for significant variations from the approved budget. This includes overseeing the allocation of funds to various programs and ensuring that the organization operates within its financial means.
  • Serves as the lead in public policy efforts that include serving as a member of coalitions, advocating directly with legislators, keeping the website and action alerts current, and providing oral and written testimony on behalf of the Epilepsy Foundation.
  • Works with the Board and staff to develop and implement an annual fundraising plan aligned with the organization's financial needs and long-term growth.
  • Submits an annual budget to the Board, reflective of agreed-upon priorities.
  • Works with the Board to evaluate agency programs and develops plans for program modification and expansion as needed. Directs, monitors, and evaluates the implementation of these plans and regularly reports status to the Board.
  • Assists in board member and volunteer recruitment, orients them in their roles, and effectively uses their skills, interests, and expertise.
  • The CEO will develop and maintain relationships with executives of other state and local health, disability, advocacy, and social welfare organizations, community leaders, business and government, advocacy coalitions, communications media, and funding sources. This includes regular communication, collaboration on initiatives, and seeking new opportunities for partnership and support.  
  • Ensures clear and consistent communication with board members and coordinates Board meeting agendas and status updates with the Corporate Board and Local Field Office Board presidents.
  • Attends all board meetings, demonstrating the CEO's dedication and active involvement in the organization's affairs.
  • Prepares and submits the organization’s activity reports for the Board, the Executive Committee, and, as needed, for publication or reporting purposes.

 

Works with the Board to develop comprehensive short- and long-range business plans to grow fundraising and donor support, guide agency activities, and facilitate the evaluation of agency programs.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Office conditions represent the primary working environment. Physical activity, including reaching, bending, lifting, and prolonged periods of standing, may be required when participating in and preparing for the Foundation’s events and programs. The ability to travel and reliably get to and from community presentations, events, and meetings is required.

EFCST provides a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical and life insurance coverage. EFCST offers a 401(k)-retirement plan with a match of 5%. The CEO will enjoy a generous paid time off (PTO) and paid holiday schedule. This position is in an in-person office in San Antonio, with frequent travel to other major service areas, including Austin and the Rio Grande Valley.
